The questions we ask ourselves become the narrative for the stories of our lives. From the classic reporter interview questions….who, what, when, why and where…to the big questions like “What is the meaning of life?” we are seeking answers all the time. In fact, we are even subconsciously seeking answers simply by the thoughts running in the background of our minds.

This concept was the pivot point of my early 20s. When I had saved enough money by waitressing, I ordered the Unlimited Power cassette tape (haha clearly dating myself–on purpose) series from Tony Robbins on TV. Working through the lessons changed my mindset and changed my life. Not trying to be overly dramatic, it’s my truth. I discovered I could dream and set goals and create plans to achieve those goals, and work the plan…and succeed. And those small daily steps have led to a life of joy and fulfillment. Not every day is a rock-star day, but in retrospect my life is pretty good.

It started with curiosity which led to self-awareness. I’m not sure how one actually comes to this journey. I imagine it will be an ongoing existential question of my life: what causes a person to choose the path of introspection? For some it can happen quite young, for other’s we wake up much later in life. Regardless, the sooner you become aware of the questions you are asking yourself and the questions you are asking others, the sooner the journey to better choices begins.
As I recently passed Tony Robbins in the halls of HSN (Home Shopping Network), I felt my knees buckle. When he said hello to me, I was stunned by a new and sudden awareness of the impact his work has had on me. He’s one of only two people I felt tongue tied around (at least in the last decade or so.) Instantly I stepped back in time and relived the journey of reading his books, practicing his prompts and growing in to the person I am today. I have rubbed elbows with celebrities for 30 years in the country music business and home shopping industry, but no one person has stopped me in my tracks to the extent I felt speechless (remember I talk for a living).

So, what questions are you asking? What questions are you asking yourself? Where will your journey take you? Whether you are finding your “Why” with Simon Sineck, training your brain with Tony Robbins, or just plain old curious…questions form our lives and create our future. So stay curious and ask wisely.
