Life with an Aupair

Life with an Aupair

As a working mom with a swing shift schedule, I have found a helpful solution that I wish I could gift to every mother. What is it? An aupair.

When my daughter was only two I made the decision to move across the country and start a new career…alone.

A few years earlier my sister had mentioned something to me about an agency that placed girls from around the world with families who needed a helping hand. This concept intrigued me long before I ever contemplated having a child. And it stayed with me up until the exact moment that I needed this idea the most.

How could I ever have anticipated the joyful enrichment and lifelong kinship of the girls who would be seemingly sent to me through the program? The cultural exchange, the wonder of how the traits and temperament of each of the girls who have lived with us have touched my daughter and me in ways and depths that are unimaginable. My heart is overwhelmed with gratefulness for each of my girls and the gifts and lifelong lessons we have learned from them.

Yuliya, from the Ukraine, came to us after 6 months of interviewing and years of soul searching on my part. She grew up on the land with her grandmother while her mom created a life for her kids in Germany by working for years. Yuliya moved to Berlin at the tender age of 10. She gave us the most touching and beautiful glimpse of both rural life and life in the big city. She had a contagious lust for life.

Alexandra, from Poland, was only with us for a short time. She showed us that life is all about the decisions we make and the way we voice them.

Melissa, from South Africa, was simply effervescent. I’m still not sure which was more beautiful…her heart or her smile.

Eva, from Germany, was a bit quiet on the outside but full of courage and strength on the inside. She was patient and kind with a sense of wisdom beyond her years.

Kayleigh, from South Africa, is currently our little sunshine. Her smile lights up a room and her fun-loving nature is infectious.

Do you ever look back at your life and see all the pieces fall together? For me it seems I try so hard to look forward and prepare and anticipate. However, what I have noticed is usually things work out just as they were meant to be in ways I could have never imagined.

So, if you need a helping hand with the most precious gift in life, I would highly recommend considering an aupair. The agency allows the girls to work up to 45 hours each week, with one full weekend off each month. You will need an extra bedroom and a big heart. Cost averaging childcare can show you at a glance the budget. The best part is that the agency handles the visa, travel and all the paperwork.

We have loved getting to know each young lady in casual moments like playdates. Their unique relationship with your child and the dependability that allowed you to grow your career–priceless. Way to go, mama!
